ChatGPT ads are labeled sponsored placements that OpenAI shows inside ChatGPT. As of October 2026, U.S. users on the free tier and the $8-per-month Go tier see them, and businesses can buy them through a self-serve tool called Ads Manager. For a roofing company, an HVAC contractor, an insurance agency or a personal injury firm, the question is not whether the platform exists. It is whether the clicks turn into booked appointments and signed cases.

This guide covers how the ads work, how buying and billing run, what to measure, and where most local businesses lose the lead after the click.

TL;DR

  • ChatGPT ads appear for U.S. users on the free and Go tiers. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Education tiers do not see ads.
  • You can buy views (CPM), clicks (CPC) or conversions, and billing is postpay, based on delivered impressions or valid clicks.
  • Targeting follows the conversation, not a keyword list, so creative has to match the questions people ask.
  • The ad is only half the system. Landing page, CRM follow-up and speed to contact decide whether a click becomes a booked appointment.
  • We run ChatGPT ads for clients done-for-you, with ads, AI follow-up, CRM and appointment setting under one roof.

What ChatGPT ads are

OpenAI officially rolled out ads in ChatGPT on February 9, 2026, starting as a pilot with large agency holding companies. The format is a clearly labeled ad, separate from the chat response. OpenAI says the ads do not influence ChatGPT’s answers, and that user conversations stay private and are not shared with advertisers.

The platform has since widened. OpenAI reports that ChatGPT reaches 1.2 billion people each week, and an August 11, 2026 update says ads have also launched in the United Kingdom, Mexico, Brazil, Japan and South Korea. This article focuses on the U.S., where local service businesses are most likely to buy.

Two details matter for planning:

  1. Reach is limited to certain tiers. Paying subscribers on higher plans do not see ads. Your audience is free and Go users.
  2. It is still labeled Beta. OpenAI’s own help pages refer to Ads Manager Beta, and its FAQ says the platform will keep changing. Expect features, rules and costs to move.

Why intent looks different here

Search ads respond to a typed keyword. ChatGPT ads respond to a conversation. OpenAI describes the platform as a place where people explore, compare and decide, which is exactly the research phase before a homeowner books a roof inspection or a driver injured in a crash picks a firm.

That changes how you write. A person asking ChatGPT how to tell if a roof needs replacement after a hailstorm is not typing “roofer near me.” They are working through a decision. An ad that reads like the next helpful step in that research performs better than one that reads like a banner.

We build creative around the actual questions customers ask: what does it cost, how long does it take, what should I check first, who do I call. Each question becomes a hook, and each hook points to a landing page that answers it and offers a booking.

How buying works: objectives, bidding and billing

According to OpenAI’s campaign creation guide, advertisers pick one of three objectives in Ads Manager Beta:

Objective Bidding What you pay for
Views CPM Delivered impressions
Clicks CPC Valid clicks
Conversions oCPC or oCPM Click-based or impression-based billing, optimized toward an event such as a lead submission

Billing is postpay. Spend accrues, and the charge happens at a threshold for card-billed self-serve accounts or at the end of the billing period for invoiced accounts. OpenAI’s billing page draws a distinction worth remembering: a campaign budget is not an account spending limit, and hitting a payment threshold does not mean a campaign stopped. It only means your card was charged for costs already accrued.

For an owner, that means one practical rule. Watch accrued spend daily during the first weeks, not just the card statement.

Which objective fits a local business

  • Clicks (CPC) is the cleanest starting point. You pay for traffic and can see cost per booked appointment once follow-up is tracked.
  • Conversions make sense once you have a steady flow of clean lead events. OpenAI’s conversion-optimized campaign guide explains that delivery is then optimized toward the event you choose.
  • Views (CPM) buy reach. Impression billing can waste spend when the landing page does not match what the person was asking about in the chat, so we use it sparingly for lead generation.

We do not publish a flat rate for our services, and we will not quote you a cost-per-click figure here. Prices on this platform have been moving, and the reliable number is the one inside your own Ads Manager account once your campaign has delivered.

Measurement: where most accounts go wrong

A click is not a lead, and a lead is not an appointment. OpenAI supports the OpenAI Pixel and the Conversions API (CAPI) so advertisers can track actions such as lead submissions, registrations and purchases. Its measurement update describes click-through and one-day view-through attribution windows and an Event Quality Score that rates the quality of the signals you send.

The common failure is fragmented data. A form fires one event, the call tracking fires another, the CRM records a third, and none of them agree. The ad system then optimizes toward whatever it sees, which is often a junk form fill.

The fix is a clean chain:

  1. The ad click lands on a page built for that specific question.
  2. The form or booking widget fires one deduplicated event.
  3. The CRM receives the lead, tags the source and starts follow-up immediately.
  4. The booked appointment, not just the form fill, is sent back as the conversion signal.

That last step is what teaches the platform what a good lead looks like. It is also where our CRM optimization work in GoHighLevel sits: pipelines, automations and event setup so the signal that goes back to the ad platform reflects real appointments.

What happens after the click

OpenAI says results depend on creative, landing page experience and how relevant the ad is to the person’s conversation. A budget alone does not produce leads.

For local service businesses, the biggest leak sits right after the form submit. Someone who clicked an ad while researching is comparing several providers. The first business to call or text back usually has the advantage, and a lead that waits until tomorrow morning often goes to a competitor.

Here is what that looks like by industry.

Home services: roofing, HVAC and similar trades

Homeowners research during or right after a problem. A lead that arrives at 9 p.m. on a Sunday needs an immediate text and a call, plus a way to pick an inspection slot without waiting for the office to open. Our home services ads management pairs the ads with AI follow-up so the response is instant and the appointment lands on a calendar.

Insurance agencies

People comparing coverage ask detailed questions before they ever request a quote. Ad creative that answers one of those questions, followed by fast contact, fits that behavior. See our insurance ads management and AI follow-up and our speed-to-lead for insurance agencies.

Personal injury and motor vehicle accident law firms

People searching after an accident are often stressed and contacting several firms at once. Speed and a smooth intake matter. Our AI speed-to-lead and intake for law firms is built for that moment. For PI and MVA firms we also run pay-per-signed-retainer case acquisition: firms pay only for signed retainers, not leads. We do not give legal or bar-ethics advice. Your firm remains responsible for how its advertising and intake comply with the rules that govern attorneys in your state, so confirm those with your own counsel or your state bar before launching any campaign.

A practical launch plan

This is the sequence we follow when we set up ChatGPT ads for a client. You can follow it yourself, or hand it to us.

  1. Confirm the audience fits. Your customers need to be U.S. consumers or businesses likely to use the free or Go tiers. Ask a few recent customers whether they use ChatGPT before choosing a provider.
  2. Set up the ad account and billing. Understand the postpay model and the difference between budget and spending limit before you set anything live.
  3. Install measurement first. Create the data source in Ads Manager, connect the Pixel or CAPI, and test that a booked appointment fires a single clean event.
  4. Build one campaign per offer. Keep a roof replacement offer separate from a repair offer, an auto policy from a home policy, and so on. Mixed campaigns blur the signal.
  5. Write several ad variations. OpenAI advises supplying multiple versions of text and visuals because variety can lift performance. We test hooks that mirror customer questions.
  6. Match the landing page to the hook. If the ad answers “how much does a new furnace cost,” the page opens with that answer and a booking option, not a generic homepage.
  7. Start with clicks, then move to conversions. Once the account sees enough clean appointment events, test conversion-optimized bidding.
  8. Review weekly. Look at cost per booked appointment, show rate and close rate, not just click-through rate.

ChatGPT ads versus Google and Meta ads

These channels do different jobs, and most local businesses should not replace one with another.

Google search ads Facebook and Instagram ads ChatGPT ads
Where intent comes from Typed keywords Interests and behavior The ongoing conversation
Best for Capturing people ready to hire now Creating demand, reaching broad local audiences Reaching people mid-research
Maturity Established Established Beta, changing quickly
Targeting by keyword Yes No No, relevance to the conversation

Our approach is to treat ChatGPT as one more source feeding the same follow-up system. If you already run Google Ads or Facebook and Instagram campaigns, ChatGPT leads should flow into the same CRM pipeline, get the same instant response and be reported next to the others. That is how you learn which channel books appointments at the lowest cost, instead of judging each on clicks.

If you want to compare approaches to automated outreach beyond paid ads, such as AI-driven outbound for sales teams, keep the same test in mind: does it end in a booked conversation, and can you see it in your CRM?

Our perspective: the ad is the cheap part to get wrong

We have served 300+ businesses since 2022, and the pattern repeats across every channel we have touched. Owners focus on the ad platform because it is where the money visibly leaves the account. The loss usually happens later: a form that emails an inbox nobody checks, a missed call at 7 p.m., a lead that gets one text and no second attempt.

Our perspective: the ad is the cheap part to get wrong — overview diagram

ChatGPT ads make that gap more expensive, not less. The audience is mid-research and comparing options, so a slow response loses to a fast one. Creative that sounds like an ad loses to creative that sounds like the next helpful answer. And a platform in Beta means nobody has a settled playbook, so the businesses that win will be the ones who measure carefully and adjust.

That is why we do not sell ChatGPT ads as a standalone tool. We build the ads, the AI agents that call and text new leads, and the GoHighLevel CRM that tracks them, and our team books the appointments. One partner covers the full path, so nothing falls through the cracks between vendors. If a channel does not produce booked appointments for your business, we want you to see that in the numbers early.

How MediaBloom runs ChatGPT ads for you

We are a Northville, Michigan agency, and we run this as a done-for-you service rather than software you operate yourself. For a ChatGPT ads engagement, that covers:

  • Campaign setup, creative variations and ongoing optimization in Ads Manager
  • Landing pages matched to each ad hook
  • GoHighLevel setup, pipelines and automations that capture each lead the moment it arrives
  • AI voice and text follow-up that responds to new leads and books appointments around the clock
  • Reporting tied to booked appointments, so you judge the channel on outcomes

To see how it would work for your business, start with our ChatGPT ads service page or look at our broader ads management offering. If your leads already come in but follow-up is the weak point, Speed to Lead AI is a good place to begin.

Risks and limits to plan for

Being straight about the downsides makes the decision easier.

  • Beta platform. Tools, policies and delivery can change. Keep your test budget at a level you can afford to lose while you learn.
  • Limited audience. Only certain tiers see ads, so ChatGPT will not reach every prospect.
  • No keyword control. You cannot bid on specific search terms, so poor creative is harder to rescue with targeting.
  • Measurement takes work. Without clean events, the system optimizes toward the wrong behavior.
  • Compliance is yours to check. Regulated advertisers, including law firms, insurance agencies and medical practices, should have their own counsel review ad content and intake practices against their state and industry rules.

FAQ

Does ChatGPT have ads?

Yes. As of October 2026, ChatGPT shows labeled ads to U.S. users on the free and $8-per-month Go tiers, according to OpenAI. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Education users do not see them.

Do ChatGPT ads change the answers ChatGPT gives?

OpenAI states that ads are separate from chat responses and do not influence the answers. It also says conversations are not shared with advertisers.

How are ChatGPT ads billed?

Billing is postpay. You are charged for delivered impressions or valid clicks depending on the bidding type you choose, and card-billed accounts are charged when spend reaches a threshold, per OpenAI’s billing guide. The campaign budget is not the same as an account spending limit, so monitor accrued spend.

Can a small local business advertise in ChatGPT?

OpenAI’s Ads Manager lets advertisers create and manage campaigns themselves, and eligibility rules are listed in its help center. Whether it makes sense for you depends on whether your customers use ChatGPT and whether you can follow up fast. We can set up and manage the campaigns, the CRM and the appointment setting for you.
